Cozy Up with a Bowl of Homemade French Onion Soup - The Ultimate Comfort Food!

Ingredients:

  • 4 large onions, sliced thinly

  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter

  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

  • 6 cups beef broth

  • 1/2 cup dry white wine

  • 1 bay leaf

  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme

  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

  • 8 slices of baguette or French bread

  • 2 cups grated Gruyere or Swiss cheese

Instructions:

  1. Melt the butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for 15-20 minutes or until the onions are soft and caramelized.

  2. Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir to combine. Cook for another 2-3 minutes.

  3. Pour in the beef broth, white wine, bay leaf, and dried thyme. Bring the mixture to a simmer and let cook for 30 minutes. Remove the bay leaf and season with salt and black pepper to taste.

  4. Preheat your oven's broiler.

  5. Ladle the soup into individual oven-safe bowls. Place a slice of bread on top of each bowl and sprinkle with grated cheese.

  6. Place the bowls on a baking sheet and broil for 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

  7. Serve hot and enjoy your homemade French onion soup!

Note: If you don't have oven-safe bowls, you can still make the soup and skip the broiling step. Simply sprinkle the cheese on top of the soup and let it melt before serving.
